Review of Medical Paediatrics
10th July 2018

The care given to my son (Joshua Dolby) was excellent from the moment the Ambulance Crew turned up right through to discharge. The staff put Joshua at ease so he wasn't afraid of what was happening, they convinced him to keep his oxygen up his nose (which he needed!) and take his inhaler without any issue. The staff were very kind and caring. Joshua commented on Saturday afternoon (23 June 2018) that the nurse on shift was a "very nice doctor" and went to tell her. My only comment would be that it was not explained to me what the implications of Joshua's oxygen levels being lower than average meant, and also when they explained that they thought the infection in Joshua's chest "was not a typical infection", I felt unclear about what that meant. It may be that they would not have been able to tell me anymore and I am expecting too much! I would like to mention some of the staff, apart from the nurse above, who were particularly outstanding: The Ambulance Crew (I know they dont work for the Trust but if you can pass it on?) - it was a male (Tom?) and female, they arrived at our house at approx 6:15pm on 22 June 2018. They took immediate control of the situation but made both myself and Joshua feel at ease. They put an oxygen mask on Joshua's Pokemon teddy (Charmander!) so that Joshua didnt feel like he was the only one with it on. They explained to me that they were going to put the sirens on, not because Josh needed blue lighting to hospital, but to get them through the traffic - they then asked Josh to listen out for it which (even in his poorly state) he found very exciting. Tom came to say bye to Joshua before he left and gave him a high five. They were really great. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner we saw on 22 June 2018 at approx 11pm in the children's assessment area on ward 13 was really excellent, very knowledgeable and although quite a matter of fact approach, let Joshua put his feet on her knee and got Josh a yogurt and was really kind to him. Also there was a Nurse in the assessment area that saw us when we first went up there (maybe around 10:30pm) she had blonde hair in a bob. She was so lovely, kind and caring, explained to us what was happening and what was going to happen. She also came and moved us when we went over to the ward, carried all my bags so I could carry Josh and helped get us settled. All in all I cannot fault the care or the kindness of the staff. In the A&E bit and then in the children's assessment area, someone made me a cup of tea. In A&E I mentioned Josh hadnt eaten, and even though it was probably around 9pm they managed to find him a sandwich. Finally, I was really pleased that they agreed to discharge Joshua with the agreement that I could pick up his antibiotics later that day, in order for us to get home and not spend the day waiting for them. Thank you to all the staff that took care of my boy (first proper time in hospital since he was born!) and kept me sane.

No one wants to be in hospital but I felt I could not have been looked after better in ward 4. Only in for three nights but would have happily stayed an extra one !!

I live on the south bank of the Humber and I would not go to any other hospital other than Hull, the care is impecable. I would trust this hospital with all of my family, I would not trust many others in my area.

Although the end result of being in HRI was ultimately highly successful for myself and I couldn't have had a better surgeon, I'm afraid I have to say that my actual stay there was very unpleasant, mainly due to what seemed like an over-emphasis on 'tick-box' procedures, training and 'target-meeting' at the expense of individual patients and their needs, and that I couldn't wait to get out. That said, I would like to thank one very compassionate nursing sister, who took time out of her busy schedule to comfort me when I was very worried about something and allowed me to go and take a shower out of scheduled routine. In summary, I can only say that whilst a stay in HRI will undoubtedly make you better I cannot say that it will make you FEEL better. Sorry.

Where do i start- from the staff in A and E to the wonderful and dedicated staff on ward 4 and 40. I cannot fault the care i have recieved over the last 19 days. The porters jolly banter as they moved me around the hospital, the radiographers and nurses good humour and patience. Most of all the staff on ward 40. What a team of people. I suspect most of their patients are too poorly to appreciate how hard this skilled and dedicated team of professionals are. I watched them quietly and tirelessly care for patients day and night like a well oiled machine relentless in their efforts. I observed extreme patience and resilience when they were faced with unreasonable and angry patients and relatives as they maintained respect and dignity in the most trying of circumstances. I cannot thank each and every person on that ward enough for the care i have recieved but special thanks go to Carlos and Tracey (Tracey's on the case). Did they ever go off duty?
